*Pack in Camp
Your hunt begins at the drive up base camp meeting, packing and loading your gear on the pack horses and mules, then saddling up the riding horses and riding into the upper camp if then prior scouting has shown more and larger bulls in that area. At times, it can be better to just stay at the base camp and riding out 1-3 miles every morning to hunt the bulls there. The bottom line is we will go where the bulls are located and even the drive in camp is located in prime elk country. During the rut, these bulls are constantly moving around due to other bulls and during the seasons hunting pressures. We simply pre-scout, then take you where the bulls are located, it is your job to shoot to bring one home. The hunting out of the upper camp is much like the detail of hunting out of the base camp information below, just 10 miles away.
*Base Camp
This hunt begins at the drive up base camp meeting area. Meals are provided and a lunch to take with you each morning. The camp is quite comfortable and help is always available. You will be riding out before sunup the next morning to where the elk have been spotted and traditionally stay during that time of the year. You will have a scabbard on your horse for your r i f l e. If you do have a scabbard of your own built especially for your rifle bring it and the wrangler will fit it to your horse. Otherwise the scabbards on the horses are of a generic type. When you are getting ready to mount your horse to ride out have your r i f l e over your shoulder and your saddle bags full of what you wish to take for the day. As a norm you will have the same horse and saddle each day which will make the mounting up quicker each day. Hunting is usually 2 hunters to 1 guide. You wont be able to shoot from the horse. When we get close to the elk we dismount and hunt on foot. If an elk is spotted while traveling in listen to your guide and be as quiet as possible. Everyone will dismount and the horses will be secured by holding or tying off the lead rope. Feel free to go over this procedure in camp with your guide first so later you can do it as quiet as possible. The horses are of a Mountain Horse Breed and experienced in riding the mountain trails. Your elk will be packed out for you to the drive in Base camp. Processing and taxidermy work can be handled there as driving your vehicle to the taxidermist or meat processor; your outfitter will have suggestions for you.
*Motel Camp-Hunt
This is the motel lodging hunt that you will find very flexible. There are no tents, no meals. The hunting is the total of the cost. Where flexibility comes into mind, is that you may hunt the same place every day or choose a different place every day. You will meet with your guide and ride horses or ATVs into the hunting area where the elk usually stay for the rut, bedding or feeding. Most of this is at a lower altitude than the other hunts and at a lower cost as well. You will have a hunt much like the two above, except more flexibility as to where you will be hunting each day. Your outfitter has a lot of ground and a lot of options.
