Richard Estes is an American artist known for his Photorealist paintings of cityscapes and storefronts. Like Chuck Close, Audrey Flack, and Vija Celmins, Estes renders images sourced from photographs by meticulously painting with barely visible brushstrokes. He often combines multiple shots into a single image, which he then manipulates through digital software. I worked in advertising, the artist explained of the origins of his method. Thats where I started using photographs to make illustrations. I saw all the other people were doing it. . .They didnt put a model in front of them and make a careful drawing. Born on May 14, 1932 in Kewanee, IL, Estes studied fine art at the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated in 1956, going on to New York to work as a commercial artist. The Allan Stone Gallery gave him his first solo exhibition in 1968, and thereafter Estes focused on painting full time. He lives and works between New York and Maine.
