This is what in France, say Lafitte, would be designated estate bottled--all the grapes grown, vinified, aged, and bottled in a single designated year from a single delimited property. The designation is a way of assuring the consumer an exceptional drinking experience based on a recognized vineyard producing superior quality grapes made into exceptional wine by superb production.
We acquired and have owned this extraordinary wine since its release in the US. It has been in our private possession and properly stored since.
The estate in Portugal is known as the Quinta. The Quinta da Agua Alta--in effect the reserve bottling of this property--a choice vineyard in the heart of the Douro--the region from which come the rare Vintage Portos. Johnny Graham was one of a handful of port shippers to declare his 1995 as a Vintage Porto according to the strict legal standards set down by the government of Portugal. That was possible because Agua Alta was one of the few quintas to enjoy in 95 a near-perfect micro-climate amid otherwise unexceptional growing conditions found in the rest of the Douro. Graham said ...our 1995, unlike most others, was simply too good to use in a blend and thereby allowed to disappear. This was wine, my dear fellow, that deserved acclaim.
With nearly 20% in alcohol, this truly exceptional dessert wine--the classic pairing is nuts, fruit or Stilton--can easily and safely withstand shipping to anywhere in the continental United States.
